Sail Training

CONFIDENCE comes with ABILITY and EXPERIENCE

Girls Go Sailing is not an authorised Sailing School under any formal training scheme.

However, many of our group’s qualified instructors work with schools that are authorised and they can offer certified sailing qualifications, for courses booked through their school, if required.

If formal, recognised qualifications are not important our instructors will tailor a training package dedicated to your needs.

Sail Training is fundamentally the same wherever you are in the world. The principles do not change irrespective of the type of sailing vessel. The most widely offered training scheme is the Royal Yachting Association of Great Britain (RYA) Yachtmaster (Sail) Scheme with around 2,500 recognised training centres around the world. Most schemes label their courses with different descriptions, however, the syllabi are all basically the same irrespective of the Scheme. For illustration purposes this website uses the RYA descriptions. This does not mean we are a recognised RYA School. Similarly, various practical techniques may be taught by different instructors, but each will serve the same purpose.

To help you decide the level of Sail Training you should aspire to next we summarise them individually from Competent Crew (Complete Novice) – Level 1 to Yachtmaster Ocean (Unlimited Global Sailor) – Level 5.

If you feel you are already proficient at any level the next one up should be your target. We are happy to advise if you are not sure. Please get in touch.

Click to check your current skill level below to determine your next step.

COMPETENT CREW – Level 1 – UNDERSTAND what to do and HOW to do it.

DAY SKIPPER – Level 2 – Take CHARGE and be RESPONSIBLE!

COASTAL SKIPPER – Level 3 – More OFFSHORE, more RESPONSIBILITY.

YACHTMASTER COASTAL/OFFSHORE – Level 4 – PROFESSIONAL Level.

YACHTMASTER OCEAN – Level 5 – GLOBAL Skippering.

Please don’t underestimate the importance of “Safe Sailing Couples”. Most of our instructors are happy to train both partners together to ensure they are both fully aware of, and have confidence in, the abilities of each other.

Please enquire if you would prefer to be trained under any of the other major schemes such as:

American Sailing Association (ASA)
International Yacht Training (IYT)

or if you would llke private tuition to a tailor made programme created specifically for you.
